5 Signs Your Spouse or Significant Other May Be Cheating on You

Article on cheating spouses
Discovering that your spouse or significant other might be cheating on you is a deeply distressing experience. While everyone’s relationship is unique, and not all changes in behavior indicate infidelity, certain signs can be red flags. At EXCALIBUR Private Investigation, serving Colorado, New Mexico, and South Carolina, we get numerous calls every day from potential clients who suspect their spouse or significant other of being unfaithful to them. Having worked hundreds of such cases over the years, we wanted to share some indicators we see over and over that a person should be on the lookout for if they suspect cheating on the part of their partner. Here are five common signs that might suggest your partner is being unfaithful.

1. Changes in Communication Patterns

Effective communication is the backbone of any healthy relationship. If your spouse or significant other suddenly becomes secretive, distant, or defensive when you try to engage in conversation, it might be a sign of infidelity. They may avoid answering questions directly or become unusually vague about their daily activities. Another red flag is if they start picking fights over trivial matters, which could be a way to create distance or justify spending time away from home.

Example: You notice that your partner, who used to share details about their day, now only provides one-word answers or avoids the topic altogether. They might also accuse you of being overly nosy or controlling when you ask about their whereabouts.

2. Increased Attention to Appearance

While paying more attention to one’s appearance can be a positive change, a sudden and unexplained shift can sometimes indicate that your partner is trying to impress someone else. This could include a new gym membership, a drastically different wardrobe, or an increase in grooming habits that weren’t previously a priority. This is one we at EXCALIBUR Private Investigation see in 100% of the infidelity cases we work!!!

Example: Your partner starts buying new clothes frequently, wears perfume or cologne more often, and spends significantly more time getting ready before leaving the house, even for routine activities like going to work or running errands.

3. Unexplained Absences and Secretive Behavior

If your partner starts spending more time away from home without reasonable explanations, it could be a sign of infidelity. This might include frequent late nights at work, sudden business trips, or spending more time with friends than usual. They may also become overly protective of their phone, computer, or social media accounts, changing passwords and ensuring their devices are always out of your reach. We've developed a variety of techniques at EXCALIBUR Private Investigation to gather evidence of a partner's unfaithfulness.

Example: You notice your partner’s phone is always on silent, and they never leave it unattended. They may also start deleting text messages or clearing their browser history regularly.

4. Changes in Intimacy

A significant change in your physical or emotional intimacy can be a strong indicator that something is amiss. This can manifest as a decrease in sexual activity, where your partner seems disinterested or avoids intimacy altogether. Alternatively, they might become unusually affectionate or introduce new techniques in bed, which could suggest they are learning from experiences outside the relationship.

Example: Your once affectionate partner now avoids physical contact, or conversely, they become overly affectionate in a way that feels forced or out of character.

5. Financial Discrepancies

Infidelity can often have a financial component. You might notice unexplained withdrawals, strange charges on credit card statements, or a sudden need for secrecy around financial matters. This could include spending money on gifts, hotels, or dinners that you were not aware of. Keeping track of your finances and addressing any discrepancies is crucial. At EXCALIBUR we've helped clients track down unexplained expenditures numerous times. In a recent case we worked, we got a copy of a receipt that was somewhat generic, interviewed the store clerk, and determined that the purchase was for a necklace our client never received from her husband.

Example: You find receipts for expensive dinners, gifts, or hotel stays that your partner hasn’t mentioned. They might also become defensive or evasive when you ask about these expenses.

Conclusion

While these signs can indicate potential infidelity, it’s important to approach the situation with caution. Accusing your partner without solid evidence can damage your relationship further. If you suspect your partner is cheating, consider having an open and honest conversation about your concerns. In a lot of cases seeking the help of a professional private investigator, such as those employed with EXCALIBUR Private Investigation, can help you find out, once and for all, if your partner is cheating.
